Carvoeiro is a town in the municipality of Lagoa. It was once a fishing village that sustained itself through sardine and tuna fishing. Its name "Carvoeiro" comes from the Arabic "Carboiere" and means fishing village.
This town has been the target of many attacks by privateers and became well known for the feat in 1544 when the troops of Pedro da Cunha defeated the Turkish privateer Xarramet.
In terms of its natural beauty, Carvoeiro has many beaches with crystal-clear waters and unique cliffs. Some examples are Praia do Carvoeiro, Praia do ParaΓ­so, Algar Seco and Gruta de Benagil. It is from Carvoeiro that many boats depart to discover the coastal strip of the Barlavento and its caves, cliffs and spectacular rock formations.
